Craniosacral Therapy is a non-invasive therapy that focuses on restoring our body’s natural self-healing mechanisms, thus encouraging the body to re-establish its own good health.
The self healing mechanisms include an internal pharmacy capable of manufacturing the drugs we need to maintain good health. In addition, something like 98% of the internal messages transmitted through our bodies are chemical with the balance being transmitted electrically around our neural circuits.
Internal chemicals known as peptides collectively input into and regulate all our bodily functions. All these chemical flows, whether internal communication messages or therapeutic (medicinal), rely on freely flowing internal liquids such as blood, lymph, iterstitial fluids and cerebrospinal fluid.
Specific external stimuli, of which unexpressed emotional experiences is the most significant, can cause the network to function much less effectively or even breakdown. (There is more detail on the internal pharmacy and the effect of unexpressed emotions in the first of the papers in the ‘Scientific underpinning’ section and also the paper in the ‘Tissue memory’ section).
The intelligence governing our body’s activities moves therapeutic chemicals (medicines) from the areas in which they’re produced into the areas that need them. Emotional experiences and physical trauma often result in our bodies developing internal tensions that become permanent. These held tensions reduce our body’s ability to move the internally produced medicines to where they’re needed.
Craniosacral therapists are trained to recognise the rhythms created by the fluid and energy flows within a healthy body and, hence, are able to sense where these normal thythms are either non-existant or disturbed. We use our hands not only to sense where these tensions are held but also energetically enable the body to release them and to restore normal internal fluid flow.
Clients remain fully clothed and there is no massage or manipulation.
Illness is often a wake-up call from the body to attend to some aspect of our personal development, including removing the results of stored past grief or trauma from the body.
Body intelligence is aware of the purpose for which we’re born. It normally maintains good health. This can, however, be overcome either as a direct result of our lifestyle or because that same lifestyle is taking us away from our life purpose. The Body intelligence ’speaks’ to us in code: the code of illness. It is the task of the craniosacral therapist to interpret that code bringing, at least, an improvement in the condition being treated.
I have treated a wide range of conditions. Many of my patients recommend my services to their friends and families. Patients benefiting from craniosacral therapy include not only adults and children but also babies who often suffer shock to their systems during their time in the womb or during the birth process. These traumas can result in some of the familiar colicky, temper tantrums, poor feeding and sleeping patterns: behaviours that can continue into childhood and even into adult-hood.
How does it work?
When a self-development issue is linked to the illness, it is enough for that issue to be acknowledged by the client (without any further discussion unless the client desires it) for the body to release the memory of that issue – sensed by the therapist as tightness, tension, inertia within the body’s systems – so that the healing can proceed. (This process is described in more detail in the ‘Tissue memory’ section).
Several treatment sessions may still be needed, especially if the condition is a long lasting one. Our bodies’ self healing mechanisms rely on a combination of the various fluid systems of the body (blood and lymph flow and the fluid nature of the cells making up all the organs and systems within our bodies) and the body’s energy fields. Our hearts generate their own electrical signal independently of the control of our brains. Such signals travel around the body through the blood and other fluid systems. Blood is an excellent conductor of electricity and, when electricity flows through a conductor, magnetic fields are created. It is with these fields that the craniosacral therapist works.
These same fields store the memory of the events of our life – rather like the hard disk on a computer – but these memories can only be accessed when the underlying Body intelligence ‘decides’ it is needed as part of the healing process. There is absolutely no danger, therefore, of more being revealed than is strictly necessary to encourage the client back onto their self development route and to enable healing to take place!
There is a two-fold purpose to this site: firstly, for those of you interested in exploring whether craniosacral therapy is a suitable form of treatment for you dealing, as it does, with a wide range of illnesses, pain and injuries; and secondly for those of you who consider yourselves ’students’, not only of craniosacral therapy but of anything that adds to our understanding of the purpose of Life and our lives.
Prospective patients should see the section headed ‘Craniosacral Therapy’.
Those of you interested in the possible scientific explanations of how Craniosacral Therapy works click on the ‘Scientific underpinning’ and/or ‘Tissue Memory’ buttons. Craniosacral Therapy, like most disciplines, has its own underlying philosophy and much that’s contained within this site challenges some of its conventional wisdom!
